YOUTUBE originals index
When YouTube launched their newly paid streaming subscription service, YouTube Red at the end of 2015, their goal was to provide a premium service with a variety of features. These features included ad-free streaming for all videos hosted by YouTube, video downloads and offline playback, and background play on mobile devices. Early 2016, YouTube began creating exclusive Original content produced in collaboration with prominent YouTube personalities and professional producers. The goal was to increase subscription signup rates using familiar YouTube creators in Original content available only through a YouTube Red subscription. The challenge here was the new original content lived alongside YouTube’s free content and lacked a premium feel, even with higher production value. The solution - a YouTube Originals Index page containing all new and upcoming releases. Here, users could view new Originals content, read a quick summary and view a short preview trailer. The result was a huge success as the premium landing experience generated 2x the free-trial signup rate over the traditional YouTube watch page experience. My role was to create all trailers and work alongside the development team to determine best video formats, quality, and video sizes for both the YouTube Originals Index page and the main YouTube platform.
